Description
Domaine Antoine Jobard Pommard 1er Cru Epenots comes from just under a hectare of forty-year-old vines on clay, right on the Pommard border.
The Epenots vineyards run along the Beaune side of Pommard and are widely held to be the commune's finest ground alongside Rugiens. Antoine Jobard, a Meursault domaine better known for white wine, farms a good parcel here of vines approaching forty years, on soils carrying plenty of clay. That clay shows in the wine's layered weight, though the result is more seductive than the broad, burly style Pommard is often typecast with, and closer in feel to Vosne. It is the only red in the allocation fermented with a proportion of whole bunches, everything else being destemmed, and Jobard keeps extraction gentle throughout. The wine is approachable early yet clearly carries the structure to age.
Good now with decanting and better from three to five years, it suits roast lamb, beef daube or a mature washed-rind cheese. Serve at 16-18°C.
