Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2022

Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas is a Northern Rhone Syrah from the domaine that did more than any other to keep its appellation alive.

Cornas is a small appellation on the west bank of the Rhone, a natural amphitheatre of steep granite terraces facing east and sheltered from the mistral, where Syrah is the only permitted grape. Auguste Clape took the family vines in hand after the Second World War, at a point when much of Cornas was being abandoned for easier farming, and became the reference point for the appellation; the domaine is now run by later generations of the family. The winemaking is deliberately old fashioned, with fruit from several parcels fermented largely with whole bunches and raised in old foudres and demi-muids, with no new oak and as little handling as possible before bottling.

Built to age and worth a decade or more in the cellar, this is a wine for slow cooked beef, game or aged cheese; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
