Domaine aux Moines Vin de France Le Berceau des Fées 2023

Domaine aux Moines Le Berceau des Fées is a dry Chenin Blanc from young vines in the Savennières Roche-aux-Moines terroir, bottled as Vin de France.

Roche-aux-Moines is one of the two named crus within Savennières, on the schist slopes above the north bank of the Loire west of Angers, and Domaine aux Moines farms a substantial part of it organically. This cuvée comes from the estate’s younger vines in a two-hectare parcel, and it takes its name, the cradle of the fairies, from the copse of trees that surrounds it. The wine is fermented wild in stainless steel and aged for six months, which is less than the appellation rules require, so it is labelled Vin de France rather than Savennières. Tessa Laroche’s precise, low-sulphur winemaking and the schist soils give a spritely, dry Chenin with cool orchard fruit and salted-lemon flesh, mouthwatering acidity and the smoky mineral character of the terroir.

Made for early drinking rather than the cellar; enjoy over the next two or three years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a goat’s cheese salad.
