Description
Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges is the family’s vin de bistro, an early-drinking Cabernet Franc from the gravel terraces beside the river Vienne.
Chinon lies on the Vienne just above its confluence with the Loire, and Cabernet Franc is the only red grape of consequence there. The Baudry family farms organically at Cravant-les-Coteaux, and the range is built around soil type: gravel terraces near the river for the lighter wines, clay and limestone slopes for the more structured ones. Les Granges comes mostly from the estate’s younger vines, planted between 1985 and 1988 in the alluvial gravel of the terraces. The fruit is picked by hand and fermented cool for two weeks in cement tanks, then raised for seven to ten months, again in cement, so no oak comes into it at any point. The wine is 100 per cent Cabernet Franc.
Drink over the next three or four years. Serve at 16°C, or a little cooler, with charcuterie, roast pork or grilled vegetables.
