Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges 2022

Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges is the family's vin de bistro, made from younger vines on the gravel terraces beside the Vienne.

Chinon lies on the river Vienne just before it joins the Loire, and its Cabernet Franc ranges from light gravel-grown reds to serious, long-lived wines off the limestone slopes. Les Granges belongs firmly to the first group: an entry-level bottling designed for early drinking, drawn mostly from the estate's younger vines, planted between 1985 and 1988 on the alluvial gravel terraces beside the river. Gravel warms quickly and drains freely, which is what gives the cuvée its supple, fruit-forward character. The fruit is picked by hand and ferments cool for two weeks in cement tanks, then is raised for seven to ten months, also in cement, so no oak enters the picture at any stage. The vineyards are certified organic. Chinon's most famous son, François Rabelais, advised drinking before the thirst arrives; this is a wine for that.

Drink over the next three or four years. Serve at 16-18°C, or lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or a goat's cheese salad.
