Description

Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges is the family's vin de bistro, an organically grown Cabernet Franc from gravel terraces beside the Vienne.

Chinon is the largest of the Loire's Cabernet Franc appellations, and its wines vary sharply with soil: the gravel terraces along the river Vienne give lighter, earlier-drinking reds, while the clay and tuffeau slopes above produce something firmer. Domaine Bernard Baudry, now run with Matthieu Baudry, farms organically at Cravant-les-Coteaux and bottles several cuvées according to site. Les Granges is the entry-level wine, made mostly from the estate's younger vines planted between 1985 and 1988 in the alluvial gravels of the terraces. The fruit is picked by hand and fermented cool for two weeks in cement tanks, then matured for seven to ten months, also in cement. There is no oak, which keeps the fruit unclouded and the tannins light.

Drink now and over the next four or five years, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast pork or grilled vegetables. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees.
