Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux 2019

Les Grézeaux is Bernard Baudry's Chinon from old vines on the gravel terraces above the Vienne, raised entirely in concrete with no oak on it at all.

Chinon lies in Touraine, at the western end of the Loire, and its reds are made from Cabernet Franc. Bernard Baudry, trained at the wine school in Beaune, began in 1975 with two hectares and built the estate to around thirty; his son Matthieu joined in 2000 and now runs it, and the vineyards are farmed organically and certified. Each bottling follows a soil type: alluvium near the riverbed for the young-vine cuvée, gravel for Grézeaux, clay over limestone on the slopes above for Clos Guillot and La Croix Boissée. Grézeaux takes its name from the gravel of the site, deposited by the Vienne over a bedrock of limestone and clay, which is warm and free-draining and gives a wine with more depth and grip than the sandy-soil cuvées. Vines here are old, some of the plantings dating to 1945. Fruit is hand-picked, fermented with indigenous yeasts and both fermented and aged in large concrete vats.

Drinking well from three years and good for a decade; serve lightly cool at 16°C with roast lamb, charcuterie or a goat's cheese tart.
