Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux 2023

Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux is a single-parcel Cabernet Franc from the estate’s oldest vines, planted on gravel over clay and limestone.

Chinon lies on the Vienne just before it meets the Loire, and its Cabernet Franc ranges from light, gravel-grown reds to firmer wines off the limestone slopes. Domaine Bernard Baudry farms organically at Cravant-les-Côteaux and is run day to day by Matthieu Baudry. Les Grézeaux comes from vines of 50 to 70 years on the gravelly Sonnay plateau above the village, directly in front of the cellar, where the gravel sits over clay and limestone. Picking is by hand, fermentation runs 15 to 20 days in cement vats, and the wine is then held in cement until bottling two winters after the harvest, so it sees no oak at all. Of the domaine’s range this is the cuvée that has moved on most under a run of warm, dry seasons, and the house describes it as the most restrained wine of the set, more mineral and floral than spicy.

Drinkable now with air, or cellar for eight to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with rare roast beef, grilled lamb cutlets or a board of pork rillettes.
