Description
Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is one of the benchmark white wines of Burgundy, drawn from a single unbroken holding on the Corton hill.
Corton-Charlemagne takes its name from the emperor Charlemagne, who is said to have held land here in the eighth century. The grand cru occupies the upper, west and south-west facing slopes of the hill, where pale marl and limestone and a cool aspect make for slow ripening in Chardonnay. Bonneau du Martray is unusual in Burgundy for owning one contiguous parcel of around eleven hectares, almost all of it in Corton-Charlemagne, and for making essentially only two wines from it. The estate has long farmed biodynamically and changed hands in 2017, when it was bought by the American owner Stan Kroenke. The wine is fermented and matured in barrel, with new oak used in moderation.
It repays long cellaring; serve at around twelve degrees with lobster, poultry in cream sauce or aged hard cheese.
