Description
Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton Rouge Grand Cru is a red grand cru from the hill of Corton, made by a domaine far better known for its white.
Bonneau du Martray holds a large, unbroken block of vineyard on the Corton hill above Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton, the great majority of it planted to Chardonnay for Corton-Charlemagne. A small portion is Pinot Noir, and it becomes this wine. Corton is the only grand cru for red wine in the Côte de Beaune, a broad limestone dome whose aspect turns through east and south along its length, so that site matters here as much as anywhere in Burgundy. The domaine farms biodynamically and passed in 2017 to the American owner Stan Kroenke, with its winemaking team and approach largely intact. Red Corton has long been overshadowed by the white, which keeps it comparatively good value.
Give it time in the cellar, and serve at cool room temperature with game birds, beef or mushroom dishes.
