Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023

Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an old vine Grenache red made without any new oak at all.

The Charvin holding in Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies in the north west of the appellation at Maucoil, on sandy soils streaked with clay and covered in places by galets roulés. Laurent Charvin farms organically and takes an unusually consistent line in the cellar: the blend is dominated by Grenache from old bush vines, with small proportions of Syrah, Mourvèdre and the rare local Vaccarèse, and there is no new wood in the winery. Fruit is fermented whole berry in concrete with indigenous yeasts and the wine is then raised in concrete and old foudre before bottling. The result is a Châteauneuf built on fruit, mineral length and tannin rather than extraction or oak, and one that ages long and slowly.

Full bodied but transparent in style, it goes with roast lamb, game and hard cheeses and repays cellaring; serve at around 17 degrees.
