Domaine Charvin Côtes du Rhône Le Poutet 2022

Domaine Charvin Côtes du Rhône Le Poutet is the estate's long standing Grenache-led red from vineyards beside Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Le Poutet takes its name from the lieu-dit at Maucoil where Domaine Charvin has its base, immediately north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape boundary. The soils are much the same as the cru alongside them, sand and red clay strewn with rolled pebbles, and the vines are old, low trained bush Grenache with Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre alongside. Laurent Charvin works the property organically and keeps the cellar work minimal: whole berries, indigenous yeasts, a long gentle maceration and élevage in concrete and old wooden foudres, with no new barrique anywhere in the range. It is one of the more serious Côtes du Rhône reds in the southern Rhône and is built to hold for several years.

Medium bodied, savoury and firm, it suits grilled lamb, sausages and braised dishes; serve lightly cooled at around 16 degrees.
