Description

Domaine Chermette Beaujolais Origine Vieilles Vignes is the cuvée that made the estate’s name, first bottled in 1986 and drawn from vines of 35 to 85 years.

Formerly labelled Cuvee Traditionnelle Vieilles Vignes, and before that Vissoux, this wine was first bottled in 1986 at the urging of Jean Brouilly, then the Michelin-starred chef at Tarare. Unchaptalised, wild-fermented, low in sulphur and unfiltered, it stood apart from the industrial Beaujolais of the period and reset expectations for what non-cru Beaujolais could be. The fruit comes from four densely planted hectares at Saint-Vérand, rooted in a pocket of dark granite, and the vines range from 35 to 85 years old — the two facts that account for a depth and mineral grip normally reserved for the crus. Fermentation follows the house pattern of whole bunches in concrete, with maturation split between tank and old casks. It remains a benchmark for the appellation.

Drinking well now and capable of three to five years. Serve at 15-16°C with terrine, roast pork or a coq au vin.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
