Domaine Chermette Brouilly Pierreux 2022

Domaine Chermette Brouilly Pierreux comes from 1.5 hectares of sixty-year-old vines at the foot of Mont Brouilly, bought for family reasons as much as commercial ones.

Brouilly is the largest and most southerly of the Beaujolais crus, and Pierreux is a small parcel just outside the hamlet of Odenas, at the foot of Mont Brouilly. Martine Chermette's grandmother was born and grew up among these vines, and as Martine puts it, the family could not resist buying the plot when it came up. The domaine tends just 1.5 hectares here, where sixty-year-old roots run deep into the eroded granite and bluestone washed down from the mountain over millennia; the name comes from pierres, stones, which fairly describes the surface. The winemaking follows the house pattern of whole-bunch fermentation and ageing in tank and old wood. Brouilly is usually the more brooding cuvée in the Chermette range, especially in its early years, with peppery spice and wild blue fruit over chalky tannin.

Worth a year or two in bottle, and good for six or more. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, roast pork or a firm goat's cheese.
