Domaine Chermette Brouilly Pierreux 2023

Domaine Chermette Brouilly Pierreux comes from 1.5 hectares of 60-year-old Gamay at the foot of Mont Brouilly.

Brouilly is the largest and most southerly of the ten Beaujolais crus, wrapping around the volcanic cone of Mont Brouilly. Pierreux lies just outside the hamlet of Odenas at the base of that hill, and its name comes from pierres, stones: the soil is eroded granite and blue andesite washed down off the mountain over millennia. Martine Chermette’s grandmother was born and raised among these vines, and the family bought the small plot for that reason. The vines are around 60 years old and root deeply into the stony ground. Winemaking is traditional and unchanged for decades — whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete, then maturation in tank and old wood — and the domaine puts the wine’s crushed-stone character down to the blue andesite of the site.

Good drinking now and over the next five years. Serve at 16-18°C, or a touch cooler in summer, with charcuterie, roast pork or a mushroom tart.
