Domaine Chermette Fleurie Poncié 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Chermette Fleurie Poncié, in magnum, comes from a 4.5-hectare site of 45-year-old vines on pink granite, one of the Fleurie climats proposed for premier cru status.

Fleurie is the most perfumed of the ten Beaujolais crus, and Poncié is one of a handful of celebrated highland terroirs along the ridge above the village, Roche Guillon among them. The pink granite here breaks down into a sandy, free-draining soil that suits Gamay and gives wines of lift rather than density. Pierre-Marie Chermette, based at Saint-Vérand in the south of Beaujolais, has built his reputation on traditional methods, and this cuvée follows them: natural, whole-bunch fermentation in large concrete vats, then ageing in large old foudres, so no new oak intrudes. It is the most seductive and graceful of the domaine's cru bottlings, especially when young, and Chermette describes the style he is after as elegant and lifted.

Drinking well now and worth five to eight years in magnum. Serve at 16-18°C, or slightly cooler, with roast duck, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
