Description
Domaine Chermette Fleurie Poncié comes from a 4.5-hectare site of forty-five-year-old vines on pink granite, one of seven Fleurie vineyards proposed for premier cru status.
Fleurie is the most perfumed of the ten Beaujolais crus, and Poncié is among a handful of celebrated highland terroirs strung along the ridge above the village, Roche Guillon being another. The pink granite there is the source of the appellation's lift, and the recent premier cru proposal reflects how consistently the site performs. Domaine Chermette, run by Pierre-Marie Chermette from Saint-Vérand, treats this as its most seductive and graceful cru bottling, particularly when young. The winemaking remains traditional: natural whole-bunch fermentation in large concrete vats, then ageing in large old foudres with no new oak involved. Chermette describes the style he aims for as élégant et aérien, elegant and lifted, and the wine tends to open rather than announce itself.
Lovely on release and will hold five to eight years. Serve at 15-16°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a soft goat's cheese.
