Description
Domaine Chermette Les Griottes is the estate’s everyday Beaujolais, named after a grove of cherry trees flanking the vineyard, here in a five-litre bag-in-box.
Southern Beaujolais, around Saint-Vérand where the Chermette family is based, sits outside the cru zone and gives the region’s most immediate Gamay. The fruit for Les Griottes comes from 40-year-old vines on dark granite soils around the family homestead. Where the domaine’s Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie are made to age, this wine is aimed squarely at light to medium-bodied, bright and cherry-fruited drinking. The winemaking has not changed in decades: traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation in concrete tanks, then maturation in tank and old oak casks. The five-litre format holds the equivalent of nearly seven bottles and, because the bag collapses as the wine is drawn off, keeps what remains fresh for several weeks after opening.
Drink over the next year or so. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled, with barbecued sausages, roast chicken or a ploughman’s lunch.
