Domaine Combier Crozes-Hermitage 'Cuvée L' Syrah 2024

Domaine Combier Crozes-Hermitage 'Cuvée L' is a pure, supple Syrah from the flat terraces of the northern Rhône around Pont-de-l'Isere.

Maurice Combier converted the family's orchards and vines to organic farming in the early 1970s, long before it was fashionable in France, and his son Laurent has run things since the late 1980s. The vines grow on alluvial terraces east of the Rhône, where rounded galets and sandy loam over clay give a supple, fruit-driven Syrah, softer than the sterner wines of the granite hill. Depending on the year the grapes are destemmed or partly fermented as whole bunches, then raised in vat and older wood with no new oak.

Blackberry, olive and cracked pepper, with soft tannin and good drive. Drinking beautifully now; serve slightly cool at 15-17C with grilled meats, sausages, roast vegetables or a charcuterie board.
