Description
Abbatucci Empire Blanc is a rare Corsican sparkling wine made from Barbarossa, an old island variety kept alive by the estate.
Domaine Comte Abbatucci lies at Casalabriva in the Taravo valley south of Ajaccio, on granite soils, and is run by Jean Charles Abbatucci, who has spent decades preserving a conservatory of nearly forgotten Corsican grape varieties planted by his father. The estate farms without synthetic treatments and follows biodynamic practice, with horses used in the steepest parcels and herbal preparations in place of chemistry. Barbarossa is one of those island rarities, a pink skinned variety that gives delicate aromatics and moderate alcohol. Empire Blanc is made by the traditional method and left twenty four to thirty six months on lees before disgorgement with a low dosage.
Dry, savoury and herbal in the Corsican maquis idiom, it suits grilled fish, shellfish and charcuterie; serve chilled at around 8 degrees.
