Description
Domaine Comte Abbatucci Ministre rouge Cuvée Collection is a Corsican red built on Sciaccarellu and Niellucciu drawn from the estate's conservatory of old island varieties.
The estate sits at Casalabriva in the Taravo valley south of Ajaccio, on granite soils under the maquis, and is run by Jean Charles Abbatucci on land his family has held for generations. His father Antoine planted a conservatory of nearly forgotten Corsican grape varieties, and that collection is the source of the Cuvée Collection wines, which sit outside the local appellation rules and are bottled as Vin de France. Farming is biodynamic and Demeter certified, with horses used for ploughing and sheep grazing the rows. In this cuvée Sciaccarellu leads, filled out by Niellucciu and a handful of the other old island varieties, and the wine is raised in large old wood rather than new barrel.
Savoury and perfumed rather than heavy, with the herbal lift the maquis gives Corsican reds, it suits grilled lamb, wild boar and hard sheep's cheese; serve at around 16 degrees.
