Domaine Comte Abbatucci Monte Mare rouge Cuvée Insolite 2022

Domaine Comte Abbatucci Monte Mare rouge Cuvée Insolite is a rare single cuvée of Sciaccarellu from the estate's Corsican vineyards above the Gulf of Valinco.

The estate sits at Casalabriva in the Taravo valley south of Ajaccio, on granite soils under the maquis, and is run by Jean Charles Abbatucci on land his family has held for generations. His father Antoine planted a conservatory of nearly forgotten Corsican grape varieties that still underpins the estate, and farming is biodynamic and Demeter certified. Sciaccarellu is the island's signature red variety, thin skinned and pale, giving wines closer in weight to Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo than to the mainland south. Monte Mare is one of the estate's Cuvée Insolite bottlings, made in very small volume, fermented with indigenous yeast and raised in old wood, and bottled as Vin de France.

Light on its feet, savoury and firm rather than fleshy, it suits grilled red meat, charcuterie and Corsican sheep's cheese; serve at around 16 degrees.
