Description
Domaine Comte Abbatucci Valle di Mare rouge Cuvée Insolite is a Corsican red made from Carcajolo, one of the rarest of the island's black grapes.
The estate sits at Casalabriva in the Taravo valley south of Ajaccio, on granite soils under the maquis, and is run by Jean Charles Abbatucci on land his family has held for generations. His father Antoine planted a conservatory of nearly forgotten Corsican grape varieties, and that collection is the source of the Cuvée Collection wines, which sit outside the local appellation rules and are bottled as Vin de France. Farming is biodynamic and Demeter certified. Carcajolo Nero had all but disappeared from Corsica before growers such as the Abbatucci family brought it back from the conservatory plantings, and it survives today on a handful of hectares across the whole island. Valle di Mare is one of the estate's Cuvée Insolite bottlings, made in very small volume, fermented with indigenous yeast and raised in old wood without new oak.
Dark fruited but firm and savoury in the Corsican manner, it suits slow cooked lamb, game and mature cheese; serve at around 16 degrees.
