Domaine Courbis Saint-Joseph Blanc 2023

Domaine Courbis Saint-Joseph Blanc is a dry, textured white from the northern Rhône with weight but no heaviness.

Brothers Dominique and Laurent now run the family estate at Chateaubourg, in the south of the appellation opposite Valence, where the Courbis family have farmed for many generations. The steep, terraced hillsides of decomposed granite also give their well-known Cornas, and the white parcels are mostly Marsanne with a smaller share of Roussanne. Low yields, hand-picking and a gentle pressing lead into fermentation in stainless steel and oak, then several months on fine lees with stirring to build texture. Farming is sustainable.

White peach, pear and almond, with a broad, dry and faintly nutty finish. Try it at 10–12°C with roast chicken, pork, richer fish dishes or a soft washed-rind cheese, and drink it within a few years.
