Description

Daniel Bouland's Chatenay comes from a steep, north-facing parcel in Chiroubles, the highest of the Beaujolais crus.

Chiroubles sits between Morgon and Fleurie at around 400 metres, and its altitude gives wines of lacy texture and finer structure than the crus below it. Bouland works a 0.65-hectare parcel of 35- to 45-year-old vines on the ridged incline of Chatenay, where the soils are the cru's typical granite and yellow sandstone. Although north facing, the site is sheltered by neighbouring forest and stays relatively warm. Bouland's method is consistent across his range: hand harvesting, whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts in the traditional Beaujolais manner, foot treading to prolong the ferment, and ageing without new oak so the granite character of each parcel remains legible. The wines are bottled with minimal handling.

Delicious young, it will also hold for three to eight years; serve lightly chilled at 14–16°C with charcuterie, roast pork or grilled salmon.
