Description

Domaine Daniel Bouland Côte de Brouilly Cuvée Mélanie is drawn from a steep half-hectare of 70-year-old vines on the blue volcanic soils of Mont Brouilly.

Côte de Brouilly is the cru planted on the slopes of Mont Brouilly itself, and its blue-tinted volcanic rock, the local terres bleues, gives the wines a mineral profile found nowhere else in Beaujolais. Bouland’s parcel lies in the lieu-dit of Tête Noire, directly above Château Thivin, planted at a dense 12,000 vines per hectare. The vines are around 70 years old and named for Daniel Bouland’s daughter Mélanie. As with all his cuvées, the wine is born of low yields and natural, whole-bunch fermentation. The result is more baritone than a wine from Chiroubles, energetic and red-fruited with redcurrant and blueberry, but marked above all by an intense volcanic smokiness. The finish is crisp and perfumed with a pinch of refreshing tannin.

Drinking well now and holding for eight years. Serve at 16-18°C in a large glass, with roast pork, charcuterie or grilled quail.
