Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Sable 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Domaine Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue Sable, in magnum, is the sandy-soil half of a Bellevue holding split in two by nothing more than a small track.

Morgon is the largest and most structured of the Beaujolais crus, and Daniel Bouland is among its most exacting growers, bottling separate cuvées according to soil type rather than blending them away. His Bellevue vines are divided into two wines, one from the sand and one from the stones, the parcels separated only by a narrow track yet quite different underfoot. This is the sand cuvée, grown on weathered granitic sand on a steeper section of slope, from vines of 40 to 50 years planted on Vialla rootstock, a low-yielding stock well suited to sandy granitic and deep silty-clay soils. Winemaking follows the domaine's usual pattern of very low yields, whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts and no fining. Tasted beside the Cailloux bottling it is the more yielding of the two, broader through the middle and with juicier tannins.

Magnums age slowly, so this will drink well for eight to twelve years; serve lightly chilled with charcuterie, roast duck or a mushroom tart at 14-16°C.
