Domaine de Chevalier Rouge Grand Cru Classé de Graves is a benchmark Pessac-Léognan red, and the 2020 is dense, fresh and built for long keeping.

Surrounded by pine woods near the village of Léognan, the vineyard is a patchwork of black gravel and clay that ripens slowly and holds its freshness. It has ranked among the classified growths of Graves since the 1950s, and is just as famous for a rare, long-lived white. Owned by the Bernard family since 1983, the estate picks by hand and places great weight on precise harvest timing. For the red, Cabernet Sauvignon is joined by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The warm, dry 2020 season produced a deep, brilliant wine of black cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry with fine pepper and vanilla spice, fleshy tannins and an earthy depth.

Still in its youth, this is best cellared for several years yet. If you open a bottle now, give it plenty of air and serve at 17 to 18 degrees alongside a rare côte de boeuf, duck with a red wine jus or a mushroom and chestnut dish.
