Description
Roc du Pière is Courbissac's Mourvèdre-led Minervois, grown on the bony, limestone-rich ground the cuvée is named after.
Minervois covers the hills between Carcassonne and Narbonne, and the estate's plots sit at 250 to 300 metres, high enough for cool nights to slow ripening. Courbissac, farmed organically by Brunnhilde Claux, makes wines that run against the Languedoc stereotype: pure-fruited and perfumed, with moderate alcohol, no new oak at any point, and a fineness that is rare in this rugged Mediterranean landscape. This cuvée comes from two parcels, eighty per cent Mourvèdre from sixty-year-old vines and twenty per cent Syrah from vines of forty-five years. They are the same estate vineyards that once fed the Les Traverses bottling, only older now. The dominance of Mourvèdre and the southern exposure make this the deepest and most layered wine in the range, while the altitude and mineral soil hold the freshness in place.
Drinking well now and worth eight to ten years; serve at 16-18°C with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, cassoulet or grilled beef.
