Description

Domaine de Courbissac Minervois Roc du Suzadou is an old-vine Carignan and Grenache blend made without any Syrah, unusually for the appellation.

Minervois runs along the foothills north of the Aude in the Languedoc, and most of its top cuvées lean on Syrah. This one does not. Brunnhilde Claux at Domaine de Courbissac has singled out a parcel close to the cellar that holds 70-year-old Carignan alongside an adjacent plot of 90-year-old Grenache, both on clay and limestone. She named the wine after Roc du Suzadou, one of the highest peaks in the Minervois. An old local growing family told her that these particular vines are grafted onto a phylloxera-resistant rootstock derived from French vine species rather than the American stock used almost everywhere else, which yields considerably less. The blend is close to half Carignan and half Grenache, and rather than being the biggest wine in the range it is the finest and most delicate.

Drinking well now and will hold for several more years. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-cooked lamb shoulder, mushroom risotto or grilled eggplant.
