Description
Domaine de Courbissac L’Orange is a whole-bunch, skin-contact white built mostly on a 70- to 90-year-old co-planted field blend of white and grey varieties.
Courbissac lies in the Minervois, in the limestone hills north of Carcassonne, and is farmed organically. Most of the fruit for L’Orange comes from the Roc Suzadou vineyard, where an old field blend of blanc and gris varieties was co-planted on limestone generations ago. Terret Gris, Carignan Blanc, Macabeu and Grenache Gris are all in there, alongside rare indigenous varieties that have not yet been identified. To that is added some Marsanne and Muscat Blanc from a second site, the Muscat lifting the top notes. The blend macerates on skins for ten days, which accounts for its colour, its nip of grape tannin and its texture. The name is in some ways a distraction: this reads less as a novelty than as a Mediterranean white made in an older manner.
Drink over the next two or three years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled octopus, a vegetable tagine or a hard sheep’s-milk cheese.
