Domaine de l'Arlot Grand Cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant 2023

Domaine de l’Arlot Romanée-Saint-Vivant comes from a quarter-hectare in Quatre Journaux, the block of the Grand Cru that sits directly below La Romanée-Conti.

Romanée-Saint-Vivant is the Grand Cru that lies lowest on the Vosne-Romanée slope, closest to the village, on deeper and more clay-rich soil than its neighbours above, and it is generally the most perfumed and silken of the Vosne Grands Crus rather than the most powerful. Domaine de l’Arlot, based at Prémeaux-Prissey a little to the north and directed by Géraldine Godot, acquired a few rows in the Quatre Journaux terroir in 1991. The vines there were planted in 1973 and the parcel yields an average of three barrels, which is to say a rounding error in the domaine’s production; the Australian allocation runs to twenty-one bottles. It is made as the rest of the cellar is made, with destemmed fruit, spontaneous fermentation on indigenous yeasts and ageing in French oak.

Worth a decade in the cellar and good for far longer. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, hare or a truffled dish of poultry.
