Domaine de l'Iserand Saint Joseph 2023

Domaine de l'Iserand's Saint-Joseph is an unoaked Syrah from two high granite sites at the northern end of the appellation.

Saint-Joseph runs some fifty kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and its character shifts with the geology. This wine draws on south-facing granite and mica-schist at Sécheras and on decomposed granite with loess and harder granite at Ozon. Both sectors sit around 300 metres above the river, close to the altitude limit beyond which vines can no longer be classified as Saint-Joseph. The fruit was fermented naturally as whole bunches with a partial carbonic element and spent two weeks on skins. No oak was used at any stage: the wine was raised for eighteen months in concrete tanks and amphorae, which keeps the emphasis on the perfume and peppery lift of northern Rhône Syrah rather than on structure or spice from wood.

Drinking well already and good for six to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with grilled lamb, charcuterie or roast vegetables.
