Domaine de l'Iserand Saint Joseph Les Sabots de Coppi 2022

Les Sabots de Coppi was Jean-François Malsert's first wine and remains the centrepiece of Domaine de l'Iserand, a Saint-Joseph from two granite parcels at Sécheras.

Saint-Joseph runs along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and the appellation boundary here is drawn by altitude: Malsert's two adjacent parcels sit at 300 metres above the river on granite and mica-schist, and any higher the vines could not be classified. The oldest are 45 years of age and give brambly depth, while fifteen-year-old vines add brightness. Fermentation is whole-bunch with no additions, and the wine was raised for nineteen months in a mixture of concrete and sandstone amphora, so there is no oak flavour to speak of — the result is peppery and floral, juicy and lively, with enough supple structure to age. The cuvée name means Coppi's hooves: Coppi was the mule owned by Jean-François's grandfather, named after the Italian cyclist.

Good now and worth five to eight years. Serve at 16 to 18°C with grilled lamb, duck or a peppered eye fillet.
