Domaine de l'Iserand Vin de France Syrah 2023

This Vin de France Syrah comes from five parcels at Sécheras that sit just too high above the Rhône to qualify for the Saint-Joseph appellation.

Domaine de l'Iserand is Jean-François Malsert's small estate on the right bank of the northern Rhône, above the village of Sécheras. The vines for this cuvée are mass-selection Syrah planted between 360 and 420 metres, above the altitude limit of Saint-Joseph, which is why the wine goes out as Vin de France. The granite here is the same, but the extra elevation brings later ripening and more acidity. Fermentation is wild and takes in whole bunches, with lighter extraction than Malsert applies to his Saint-Joseph, and the wine is raised in concrete to keep the fruit vibrant and the tannins supple. The style sits somewhere between the granite terroirs of the northern Rhône and those of Beaujolais: smoked meat and violets, juicy tannin and a high-grown crunch.

Drink over the next three or four years. Serve cool at 16°C with charcuterie, grilled sausages or a pork and fennel ragù.
