Description
Domaine de la Beche Beaujolais Villages is a granite-grown Gamay from the northern half of Beaujolais, the half that also contains the ten crus.
The Beaujolais Villages appellation covers thirty-eight communes in the north of the region, where weathered pink granite and schist replace the clay and limestone of the south. Those poor, free-draining sandy soils suit Gamay, giving a wine with more definition and grip than straight Beaujolais without the weight of a cru. Vines are typically trained as gobelet bush vines and picked by hand, whole bunches are used, and fermentation is semi-carbonic in the traditional Beaujolais manner: whole clusters in a sealed vat, intracellular fermentation inside the berry, then a short maceration. Ageing is brief and usually in concrete or steel to keep the fruit direct, with bottling ahead of the following harvest.
A juicy, low-tannin red for charcuterie, roast chicken, grilled sausages and picnic food; serve lightly chilled at 13 to 14 degrees.
