Description
Domaine de la Beche Régnié is Gamay from the youngest of the ten Beaujolais crus, the last of them to be promoted from Villages status.
Régnié sits on the western edge of the cru belt between Morgon and Brouilly, on slopes of decomposed pink granite that break down into a coarse sand locally called gore. The soil is poor and drains fast, which restrains vigour and tends to produce a perfumed, finely tannic style of Gamay rather than a dense one, and the cru is often described as the most approachable of the ten. Fruit is picked by hand, as the appellation rules require, and vinified whole-bunch by semi-carbonic maceration before a short élevage in tank or older wood. The wine is bottled early to preserve its freshness and the bright red-fruit character of the granite soils.
Fragrant and light on its feet, it is at home with charcuterie, roast pork, soft cheeses and simple bistro cooking; serve lightly chilled at around 14 degrees.
