Domaine de la Pigeade Beaumes de Venise rouge Hurlevent is a Grenache and Syrah blend from the cru vineyards at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail.

Beaumes de Venise was raised to cru status in the mid 2000s, the first Rhone appellation to be recognised principally on the strength of its geology. The vineyards sit in a fold of the Dentelles de Montmirail where Triassic marl, gypsum and iron rich sandstone meet the more familiar limestone scree of the southern Rhone, and the mix of soils gives reds that carry weight without the baked character of the flatter valley floor. The estate is run by the Vache family and is best known for its Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, farming its red vineyards on the same slopes. Hurlevent is blended from 60 per cent Grenache and 40 per cent Syrah, the Grenache bringing flesh and the Syrah a darker, more savoury frame.

A supple, peppery southern Rhone red for lamb, grilled sausages and ratatouille; serve at around 16 degrees.
