Description
Domaine de la Pigeade Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise is a vin doux naturel from the southern Rhone, carrying 110 grams per litre of residual sugar.
Beaumes-de-Venise sits at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Vaucluse, and its Muscat has been made since Roman times. The wine is a vin doux naturel: fermentation is stopped part way by the addition of neutral grape spirit, which leaves the natural sugar of the grape in the wine and lifts the alcohol to around 15 per cent. Muscat a Petits Grains, in its white and darker skinned forms, is the only permitted variety, and it is one of the few grapes whose wine actually smells of the grape itself. Domaine de la Pigeade is a specialist of the appellation, a family estate at the foot of the Dentelles that gives the bulk of its vineyard to Muscat.
Sweet but held together by acidity, it is the classic partner for apricot tart, fresh melon, blue cheese and foie gras; serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
