Domaine de Ladoucette Baron de L Pouilly Fumé 2017

Domaine de Ladoucette Baron de L Pouilly Fumé is the flagship bottling of the de Ladoucette family, from the flint slopes above the upper Loire.

Pouilly-sur-Loire lies on the right bank of the river, across the water from Sancerre, and its Sauvignon Blanc grows on Kimmeridgian marl and on bands of silex, the hard flint that gives the appellation the 'fumé' in its name. The de Ladoucette family has been based here at Château du Nozet for generations and is among the largest landholders in the appellation. Baron de L is made only in years the house judges worthy of it, from older vines on the flintier parcels, and is held back before release rather than sold on the heels of the harvest. Its tall, hand-blown bottle has become one of the more recognisable shapes in the Loire.

Serve at 10 to 12 degrees with turbot, poached salmon or a mild goat's cheese; unusually for Sauvignon Blanc, it takes well to age.
