Description
Domaine de Ladoucette Sancerre 'Comte Lafond' is the family's Sancerre, from the steep limestone and flint slopes above the upper Loire.
Sancerre climbs around a hilltop town on the left bank of the river, and its vineyards fall into three broad soil types: the Kimmeridgian marl growers call terres blanches, the hard limestone pebbles known as caillottes, and silex, or flint, nearer the water. Sauvignon Blanc found its footing here after phylloxera destroyed the older Pinot Noir plantings, and the white wine appellation was recognised in 1936. Comte Lafond is the Sancerre label of the de Ladoucette family, whose base is at Château du Nozet, just across the river at Pouilly, and it is drawn from fruit grown across the appellation rather than from a single slope.
Serve at 10 to 12 degrees with goat's cheese, above all the Crottin de Chavignol made in the village up the road, or with shellfish and grilled fish.
