Domaine de Long Dai 2022

Domaine de Long Dai is China's take on a classic Bordeaux-style blend, grown in Shandong province by the Rothschild family of Château Lafite.

Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) searched for several years before settling on the hills of the Qiu Shan Valley, near Penglai on the Shandong coast. Vines went in from 2011 on sandy, granitic soils, and the slopes were shaped into terraces in keeping with local farming tradition. The nearby Yellow Sea brings a maritime influence, and because each terrace ripens at its own pace, the grapes are hand-picked in several rounds. For 2022 the blend brings together Cabernet Franc, Marselan and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety is vinified separately in temperature-controlled steel tanks, and only the best lots are chosen for the final blend, which is aged in French oak from the family's cooperage before bottling.

Give it time in the glass, or a short decant, and serve at 16 to 18 degrees. Peking duck, slow-cooked lamb shoulder or beef with black bean sauce all work well. It can be cellared with confidence for ten years or more.
