Description
Domaine de Long Dai Hu Yue is the second wine of the Rothschild (Lafite) estate in China, made to be more approachable in its youth than the grand vin.
Launched in 2020, less than a year after the first Long Dai, Hu Yue was designed by the technical team to show a more aromatic, spicy side of the estate's terraced vineyards. Its name draws on Chinese tradition: 'Hu' recalls a jade tablet once used in prayers for a good harvest and also evokes the tiger, while 'Yue' refers to China's five sacred mountains. The grapes are hand-picked from granite terraces in the Qiu Shan Valley, where the Yellow Sea moderates the climate. This vintage combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Maturation is shorter than for the grand vin, typically around a year, partly in French barrels from the DBR Lafite cooperage and partly in tank.
Open it now or over the next several years. Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with char siu pork, cumin lamb skewers or a peppered steak. A brief decant helps it open up.
