Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2021

Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Vieilles Vignes is made only in the strongest years, from parcels of vines planted as far back as 1900.

The fruit comes from Charbonnières and Les Esqueirons. Charbonnières, planted in 1900, lies on the northern side of the Crau plateau on mostly sandy soils over molasse sandstone, and is almost entirely Grenache with a few rows of Mourvèdre. Les Esqueirons sits behind the château ruins on the western side of the hill, where the Grenache, along with some co-planted Roussanne, is rooted in limestone and white clay; part of it dates to 1900 and the rest to 1949. The cellar work is deliberately minimal and identical to the estate's classic bottling: natural fermentation, no new oak, eighteen months in concrete and large foudres, and bottling without filtration. What is in the glass is the fruit of very old vines on two distinct soils.

Approachable after five years and capable of two decades or more. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, daube of beef or a mushroom and thyme casserole.
