Description
Domaine de Marcoux Raisin de Loup is a Vin de France red drawn from two small plots on the alluvial plain between the Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape proper.
The land below the Châteauneuf plateau falls outside the appellation boundary, and it is historically where local growers kept their small holdings of Vin de Table, now Vin de France. Domaine de Marcoux, one of the established names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, farms organically and makes this wine from two such parcels. The blend is Grenache and Syrah with a dollop of Caladoc, an obscure crossing of Grenache and Malbec rarely seen on a label. Sophie Armenier is explicit that the brief is an everyday red rather than a scaled-down version of the grand vin: fermentation is natural, extraction gentle, and ageing takes place in cement vats with no oak involvement at all. The name translates roughly as grapes of the wolf, the local patois for the black nightshade that grows among the vines.
For drinking now and over the next two to three years. Serve at 16°C, or a touch cooler, with charcuterie, grilled lamb or ratatouille.
