Domaine de Poutéou Bas Armagnac 5 Years Old is a young, forthright grape brandy from Gascony, bottled at 49%.

Armagnac has been distilled in Gascony since the fourteenth century, which makes it France's oldest spirit, and the tawny sands of the western zone give it particular perfume. A low-alcohol, high-acid base wine goes through the continuous column still, not the twice-distilled pot still used in Cognac, and comes off lower in strength carrying more of the grape. Five years in oak softens and colours it without taking away its youthful vigour.

Bright and fiery, with vine fruit, dried apricot and a warm oak finish. Drink it neat at room temperature after dinner or over a single large ice cube, and try it with dark chocolate or aged hard cheese.
