Domaine Denis Mortet Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée de Noble Souche 2023

Domaine Denis Mortet Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée de Noble Souche is a regional Burgundy grown on the high plateau at Daix, above Marsannay at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits.

Bourgogne Rouge is the region's broadest red appellation, and its quality depends almost entirely on who is farming the vines and where they sit. This cuvée comes from the plateau at Daix, where the vines lie at around 400 metres, an altitude that holds acidity and gives the fruit a clear, unforced purity. The domaine was built by Denis Mortet in Gevrey-Chambertin and is now run by his son Arnaud, who has kept the family habit of treating the humbler appellations with the same care as the crus. Yields here are kept very low, which accounts for the depth and the capacity to age. Over half the bunches went into the vat whole, and the wine saw only ten per cent new oak.

Approachable on release and worth five to eight years in the cellar, it suits roast chicken, mushroom risotto or a plate of charcuterie. Serve at 16-18°C.
