Description
Domaine Denis Mortet Clos de Vougeot comes from 0.32 hectares of vines more than 60 years old in the lower part of the grand cru.
Clos de Vougeot runs from the Route Nationale at the bottom of the slope right up to the château, and the lower sections, with their heavier, damper soils, are usually regarded as the weakest ground in the vineyard. Mortet's parcel is down there, yet the domaine has long produced one of the clos's finest wines, something other growers in the vineyard readily concede. Vine age is part of the reason and meticulous farming is the rest. The house style here, since Arnaud Mortet took over from his father, has moved towards greater lift and finer tannins, and this cuvée is consistently described as intensely floral, closer in shape to Musigny than to the sturdier wines the clos often gives. Only 20 per cent new wood was used, with 80 per cent whole berries hand-destemmed. Quantities are extremely limited.
Give it five to eight years and expect it to hold two decades. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, venison or truffled potatoes.
