Domaine Denis Mortet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2022

Domaine Denis Mortet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from 0.32 hectares of vines over 60 years old in the lower part of this historic walled vineyard.

The Clos de Vougeot covers 50 hectares behind walls built by the monks of Cîteaux, and is divided among some 80 owners, so the name alone says little; what matters is the parcel and the grower. Mortet's vines lie in the lower section, where heavier clay collects, but they are among the oldest and most carefully farmed in the entire clos, and other growers acknowledge that this is one of the vineyard's finest wines. The style is intensely floral, closer to Musigny than to the sturdier reading Vougeot often gives. This release is powerful and comfortably absorbs its 50% new oak while staying perfumed and bright, and 50% of the fruit was destemmed by hand, berry by berry, to bring finesse and lift to a naturally substantial wine.

Best from eight to ten years and capable of much longer. Serve at 16-18°C with roast venison, duck or a truffled potato gratin.
