Domaine Denis Mortet Fixin Vieilles Vignes 2023

Domaine Denis Mortet Fixin Vieilles Vignes blends two old parcels at opposite ends of a village the family believes is badly underrated.

Fixin lies at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, above Gevrey-Chambertin, and remains one of the few appellations on the Côte d’Or still selling at a sensible price. The domaine has long made its Fixin from a 0.32-hectare parcel in Champs Pennebaut, midway up the slope on the Marsannay side of the village. About a decade ago the family added a plot of sixty- to seventy-year-old vines in Les Champs de Charmes, at the southern end of Fixin on the Gevrey boundary, and since 2014 the two have been blended. Both sites have the classic clay and limestone of the Côte d’Or, though the soils in the north are considerably darker. Around 70 per cent whole bunches were included, partly because the tiny berries these vines produce lend themselves to it, and new oak was kept low.

Drinks well from three or four years and holds for a dozen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, coq au vin or a semi-hard alpine cheese.
